Our occupational therapists employ multisensory strategies, including the Handwriting Without Tears® program, to teach essential skills such as letter formation, letter recognition, print awareness, and sound-letter relationships. This comprehensive approach reinforces the connection between writing and reading development.

Handwriting difficulties can stem from various factors, including sensory-motor integration challenges, fine motor deficits, visual-motor integration challenges, or limited instruction. Our early intervention approach, offered through both individual occupational therapy and our Handwriting Club, is designed to address these challenges and lead to significant improvement. In both settings, children engage in a fun, supportive environment that focuses on:

  • Enhancing hand control and coordination
  • Mastering correct letter formation
  • Improving consistency in letter and word sizing and spacing
  • Developing overall legibility

Our skilled occupational therapists use a developmentally-based curriculum and interactive methods to support cognitive functions and learning. The Handwriting Club provides personalized group instruction tailored to each child's specific skills and age level, as determined by an initial assessment. Our small group size and engaging indoor sensory motor gym promote a positive learning experience. We incorporate whole-brain learning techniques and the Handwriting Without Tears® program to make handwriting mastery an enjoyable process for students of all levels.

For children who require more focused attention or have specific needs that are best addressed one-on-one, individual occupational therapy sessions are recommended. This is particularly beneficial for children with sensory processing challenges, attention difficulties, or developmental coordination disorder. Our occupational therapists will assess your child's needs and guide you towards the best option - whether that's the Handwriting Club for those who can benefit from small group learning, or individual therapy for those who require more personalized attention. Both approaches aim to improve overall legibility while boosting motivation and self-confidence in written communication.

Dysgraphia

Child Success Center offers comprehensive support for children with dysgraphia and related writing challenges. Dysgraphia is a learning disability that impairs a child's ability to write coherently, affecting handwriting, spelling, and the organization of thoughts on paper.

Our interdisciplinary team of occupational and educational therapists conducts thorough assessments to identify specific difficulties such as letter reversals, inconsistent sizing, and poor pencil grip. Using these insights, we develop personalized intervention plans incorporating varied instructional methods, including printing, cursive, and keyboarding techniques.
